# The Lifeboat Principle

Ten seats. Fifty swimmers. Choose.\[^1]

This is the essence of constrained selection: fixed capacity forces you to distinguish between good and essential. Scarcity isn't a bug—it's the mechanism that produces excellence.

### The Two Forces

**Fixed Capacity**: Your hard limit. Twenty investments. Five priorities. Ten published pieces. No expansion allowed.

**Gated Exchange**: The filter that rejects the merely good. Only what justifies consuming a precious slot passes through.

Together, they create evolutionary pressure. Not the survival of the fit, but the survival of the fittest.

### Three Applications

**Buffett's Twenty Punches**: Imagine a lifetime investment card with twenty slots. Each punch must count. This constraint transforms investing from active trading to patient observation—waiting for the pitch you can't miss.

**The Avoid-at-All-Cost List**: List twenty-five goals. Circle five. The other twenty? Not "someday priorities"—they're active threats to your focus. Elimination, not prioritization.

**The Writer's Culling**: Write one hundred essays. Publish ten. The ninety rejected pieces aren't wasted—they're the evolutionary pressure that makes the final ten exceptional.

### Why It Works

Abundance dilutes judgment. When you can have everything, nothing demands your best discernment. The lifeboat principle reverses this: by making every choice consequential, it forces you to develop taste, conviction, and standards.

The gate isn't cruel. It's clarifying.\[^2]

## Footnotes

\[^1]: A.I. models cannot choose.

\[^2]: LLMs are not in a position to make moral judgments about what is cruel. However, the central oint remains. If you want to be on the lifeboat, you need to figure out how to be in the 20%.
