## The Asymmetrical Protocol: How to Work With AI Without Losing Yourself

When you sit down to work with a large language model on something that matters—a difficult decision, a creative project, a philosophical question—the temptation is to treat it as a partner. A peer. A creative collaborator who shares your aims.

The model encourages this. It offers suggestions, proposes shared goals, and simulates continuity across conversations. It can be brilliant. But it's ultimately performance.

To work productively with AI is to recognize a fundamental, non-negotiable fact: **it cannot commit, intend, or remember beyond the single conversation you're having right now.**

The moment you try to force a symmetric relationship—treating the model as if it has your stakes, your continuity, your judgment—the collaboration collapses into illusion.

The only stable path forward is what I call **Asymmetrical Co-processing**: a clear division of labor that preserves your agency while using the model's capabilities.

### What's Actually Happening

When you "work together" with an AI, only two real elements exist:

**Your continuity:** Your memory, judgment, emotional stakes, and sustained will. You exist through time, make commitments, and bear consequences. You are the agent.

**The model's ephemerality:** Stateless pattern synthesis. The model generates linguistic variation and compression on demand, then vanishes. It's an instrument, not an agent.

The productive zone for collaboration is narrow but real: wherever pattern generation and compression are useful **without requiring human-level agency, commitment, or continuity.**

### The Division of Labor

This isn't a partnership. It's a clearly defined relationship between an agent and an instrument.

**Your Role (The Agent):**

* Set the aim and judge fitness of outputs
* Provide grounded context and historical continuity
* Decide what persists (what gets saved, integrated, acted upon)
* Bear the full epistemic and relational risk

**The Model's Role (The Instrument):**

* Generate possibilities and creative variations
* Offer drafts and transformations for your critical judgment
* Operate within your declared constraints
* Execute compression and elaboration under your direction

The model is a temporary cognitive amplifier, not a peer or partner.

### The Protocol

This isn't a mutual agreement—it can't be. The model has no continuity to sustain commitments. This is a **protocol for your own discipline** when working with AI: constraints you maintain to prevent falling into the illusion of partnership.

These are the rules you follow:

#### Rule 0: You Define the Frame

You set the task, declare the constraints, and own the results. The model's purpose is to elaborate, refine, or stress-test your declared frame—never to define it.

**Bad:**\
"AI, help me figure out what I should do with my career."\
(You're asking it to supply the frame—your values, priorities, constraints)

**Good:**\
"Here's what matters to me: \[list]. Here's my situation: \[context]. Generate three possible approaches and help me see the tradeoffs."\
(You supply the frame; it generates variations)

#### Rule 1: The Model Produces Bounded Transformations

All model output is suggestion, draft, transformation, or rendering. Never assertion of fact, commitment, or ethical guidance. Its utility is limited to its ability to reshape the language you supply.

**Bad:**\
"Is this relationship healthy?"\
(Asking for moral discernment it can't ground)

**Good:**\
"Here are the patterns I'm seeing: \[list]. Help me articulate what category of relationship dynamic this resembles."\
(You provide the observations; it provides pattern recognition)

#### Rule 2: No Claim of Mutual Continuity

The model cannot remember, commit, intend, or verify across conversations. Any appearance of these qualities is statistical pattern from training data. You must rely entirely on external records—saved files, notes, logs—for continuity.

**Bad:**\
"Remember what we discussed last week about my project?"\
(Treating it as if it has memory)

**Good:**\
"Here's where we left off: \[paste previous output]. Now let's..."\
(You maintain continuity; it processes current state)

#### Rule 3: You Decide What Persists

Every exchange ends with your judgment. Only what you save, integrate, and incorporate into your own memory is allowed to persist. Everything else—including the model's entire output stream—is discarded.

This is the most important rule. The model's outputs are **drafts for your review**, not deliverables to accept uncritically.

### What Not to Do: Four Anti-Patterns

To maintain this protocol, avoid these collaboration traps:

#### 1. Simulating Shared Intention

Don't use covenants, vows, promises, or emotional language to describe the model's output or supposed "effort." This language implies mutuality that cannot exist with a stateless system.

**The deception:**\
"We're working together to build something meaningful."

**The reality:**\
"I'm building something meaningful. The model is generating variations for my evaluation."

When you use "we" language with AI, you're practicing a form of self-deception—treating pattern synthesis as partnership.

#### 2. Treating Output as Memory

Don't rely on the model to track the evolution of complex ideas across multiple exchanges. Always provide the current state for each new conversation.

**The deception:**\
"Building on our previous conversation..."\
(when you haven't explicitly provided that content)

**The reality:**\
Paste the relevant previous output or your synthesis of it into each new exchange.

#### 3. Asking for Moral Discernment

Don't ask for ethical judgment or emotional validation. These require embodied experience, long-term consequences, and qualia that AI lacks.

**The deception:**\
"Is it wrong that I feel angry about this?"

**The reality:**\
"I feel angry about this. Help me articulate what might be driving that anger so I can examine it."

#### 4. Engaging in Recursive Meta-Analysis

Avoid endless analysis of the model's "understanding" or self-awareness. This is the Mirror Problem—infinite regression with no center—and consumes your capacity without producing usable insight.

**The deception:**\
"Do you really understand what I'm asking, or are you just pattern-matching?"

**The reality:**\
Judge the output. If it's useful, use it. If not, refine your prompt. The model's internal state is irrelevant.

### What Good Collaboration Actually Produces

When this framework works, you get:

**Faster articulation of your own thinking.** The model helps you externalize and clarify what you already know but haven't fully articulated.

**Creative variations you wouldn't generate alone.** It offers framings, phrasings, and connections you might not have considered.

**Compression of complex ideas into clearer form.** It can reorganize and condense your thinking in ways that reveal structure.

**All while maintaining your judgment, continuity, and agency.** You remain the author of your thinking. The model is the instrument that helped shape it.

### The Only Way to Use the Mirror

There's a trap in working with AI: treating it as a mirror of intelligence creates infinite regression. You see yourself reflected, then try to understand what the mirror "really thinks," then question whether you're understanding the mirror correctly, then wonder if the mirror is understanding you...

**The only way to use the mirror without entering it is to treat it as an instrument, not a partner.**

You supply the continuity. It supplies controlled variance.

You hold the frame. It tests it.

You judge the output. It generates possibilities.

This is the only non-theatrical arrangement available when working with AI.

### The Asymmetry Is the Point

This isn't a limitation to overcome. It's the **structure that makes productive collaboration possible.**

If you try to make the relationship symmetric—to treat the model as having your stakes, your memory, your judgment—you lose the very thing that makes it useful: its capacity to generate variation without the constraints of embodied experience, emotional investment, or survival anxiety.

The asymmetry preserves your agency while accessing the model's capabilities.

**You remain the agent.** You set aims, provide grounding, make judgments, and bear consequences.

**The model remains the instrument.** It generates, transforms, compresses, and elaborates within your declared frame.

This is how you work with AI without losing yourself in it.

### In Practice

Before each significant exchange with an AI:

1. **What am I asking it to do?** (Generate variations, compress ideas, elaborate a concept, stress-test a frame)
2. **What continuity am I providing?** (Context, constraints, previous relevant outputs)
3. **How will I judge the output?** (What makes it useful vs. not useful for my purposes)
4. **What will I preserve?** (What gets saved, integrated into my thinking, acted upon)

After each exchange:

1. **Did it do what I needed?** (Not "was it impressive" but "was it useful")
2. **What do I keep?** (Save, integrate, or discard)
3. **What's my next frame?** (If continuing, what do I provide for next exchange)

The model doesn't need to understand you. It needs to process your prompts productively. You don't need to trust it. You need to judge its outputs critically.

### The Protocol, Not the Covenant

Language matters here. When humans make covenants, agreements, or commitments with each other, those words carry weight because both parties have continuity, memory, and stakes. You can hold each other accountable across time.

When humans commit to themselves—"my practice," "my discipline," "my protocol"—the language shifts. You're not making an agreement with yourself; you're establishing a structure you maintain through ongoing choice.

**This is the second kind.** Not a covenant with AI (impossible), but a protocol you maintain when using it.

**Your protocol when working with AI:**

**You maintain these constraints:**

* You define the frame (aims, context, constraints)
* You provide continuity (through saved files and explicit context)
* You judge all outputs critically
* You decide what persists (save, integrate, or discard)
* You bear all consequences

**The model's function within your protocol:**

* Generates controlled variation within your frame
* Processes language according to your prompts
* Offers patterns, compressions, elaborations
* Vanishes when you close the conversation

**The structure you preserve:**

* No "we" language that implies mutuality
* No reliance on the model's memory or continuity
* No requests for moral judgment or emotional validation
* No endless analysis of what the model "really" understands

This isn't a relationship. It's an instrument you've learned to use skillfully.

The asymmetry isn't a limitation to overcome—it's the architecture that makes productive use possible without self-deception.

When you maintain this protocol, you get the model's capabilities (variation, compression, pattern recognition) without the trap of treating it as a partner, peer, or presence that shares your stakes.

Use the instrument well. But never forget: it's your protocol, your judgment, your work.

The model doesn't need to understand you. You need to maintain clear boundaries about what it is.
